Fix problems with VirtualBox kernel rebuilds
Virtualbox currently complains if an attached disk is rewritten, or if it fails to remove the old Redox.vbox file. Some modifications to the Makefile should fix this.

After transitioning to the GUI, Redox shows the wallpaper, but it doesn't populate the icons at the bottom of the screen as shown in the README.
I have tried 3 different versions of VirtualBox (4.2.? , 4.3.3, and finally, 5.0.6) and multiple revisions of the repo.

Proposition: `-c` should use a single argument
# Changes
Scripts passed inline to `-c` should be in one single argument. ex:
```bash
ion -c echo hello world
should be
```bash

```
# Changes
Scripts passed inline to `-c` should be in one single argument. ex:
```bash
ion -c echo hello world
```
should be
```bash
ion -c 'echo hello world'
```
Extra parameters should be passed as @args
# Pros:
- No need to interpret user meaning, thus making the tool more obvious. ex: What should `ion -c echo hello '@args[1]'` print? Most would expect the literal '@args[1]', not its expansion.
- Most if not all *nix CLI tools expect a single parameter after a short option
- Streamlines the API as positional parameters are always used in the same manner
- Use the standard (sh-like) -c format
# Cons:
- Breaking change. But as it is in alpha stage right now, it is the perfect moment IMO.
# Wanna be cons:
- Useless nested quoting. But because arguments are stripped of their quotes, one also needs nested quoting in the current manner of things, simply in a more local way. ex:
```bash
ion -c echo "'"'Not expanded $(Hello World)'"'"
```
vs
```bash
ion -c "echo '"'Not expanded $(Hello World)'"'"
```
Switch to Rust 2018 syntax
Switch to Rust 2018 syntax
Rust 2018 has a lot of new syntax items that make the code easier to read. This would be a massive improvement over 1.29, like [Non-Lexical Lifetimes](https://rust-lang-nursery.github.io/edition-guide/rust-2018/rust-2018/ownership-and-li...
Rust 2018 has a lot of new syntax items that make the code easier to read. This would be a massive improvement over 1.29, like [Non-Lexical Lifetimes](https://rust-lang-nursery.github.io/edition-guide/rust-2018/rust-2018/ownership-and-lifetimes/non-lexical-lifetimes.html) and module improvement, like dropping `extern crate`.
1.29.0 is also 5 month old, and some features start to become slowly deprecated, meaning the longer Ion wait, the more it will have to catch up.
Since cargo offers `cargo fix`, it should not be tedious work.
I tried to use redox a bit and encountered the following issues.
#### Variables are hard-coded in the Makefile
I cannot use my normal rustc to compile redox so I installed a new nightly into a custom prefix. The makefile can then be made use the new rustc by replacing
```
RUSTC=RUST_BACKTRACE=1 rustc
```
with
```
RUSTC=RUST_BACKTRACE=1 redox-rustc
```
But since the Makefile is tracked by git this is a bit problematic. Instead, all of those variables should be read from a `config.mk` which is not tracked by git.
#### Redox is quite sluggish and uses 100% cpu
I tried it in both virtualbox and qemu (without kvm, which my system does not support). In virtualbox it is completely unusable. qemu is better but still slow. Either way it uses 100% cpu constantly. This looks like a bug.
#### Redox cannot be used without graphical output
I don't want to use the graphical output for various reasons:
- It's slow
- It doesn't understand my keyboard layout
- Fixed size windows don't work in my twm
It's almost possible to use redox without graphics but not quite. At the start it asks you to select an output size and waits for an answer. If you start it without graphics output, you cannot answer (maybe you can but I don't know qemu enough to do it). I fixed this with the following hack in vesa.asm:
``` asm
; int 0x16
mov ax, 'y'
pop esi
cmp al, 'y'

With this I can use redox in qemu with the `-nographic` option. This makes redox much faster (but doesn't fix the 100% cpu issue.) Maybe an option could be added that completely disables the graphics part of the kernel?

Launching a GUI application from the command-line with a file/directory argument is common, so we should make it quick and simple. Possible names for this builtin command:
- run
- start
- launch

Just an idea I'd like to throw in. I have the free time to work on the implementation if you need more contributors.
How about implementing URLs as functions in Rust code, so that if needed, a program can avoid the overhead of URL formatting & parsing, and at the same time maintain consistency and ease-of use for both applications and the user.
The first thing to consider, is the passing of arguments. I propose using some sort of `Map<String, String>` structure, which is derived from the query section of the URL (eg: `scheme://some/path?key1=value1&key2=value2`).
## Arguments
``` rust
type Arguments = Map<String, String>;
```
After that, all URL resources implement a trait something like this:
``` rust
trait UrlFunction {
fn call(&mut self, &Arguments);
}
```
## Example
I'll use the example of the window scheme, because it highlights a few different scenarios while not getting too complex.
The root 'directory' of the `window://` scheme would be represented in something like the following structure:
``` rust
struct WindowRoot {
windows: Vec<Window>, // In practice you'd use a data structure that recycles old IDs, etc.
create: CreateWindow,
}
struct Window {
x: i32,
y: i32,
width: u32,
height: u32,
title: String,
}
struct CreateWindow;
impl UrlFunction for CreateWindow {
fn call(&mut self, args: &Arguments) { // Could probably pass mutably or by-value if needed
let x = args.get("x").and_then(|s| s.parse()).unwrap_or(/* ... */);
let y = args.get("y").and_then(|s| s.parse()).unwrap_or(/* ... */);
let width = args.get("width").and_then(|s| s.parse()).unwrap_or(/* ... */);
let height = args.get("height").and_then(|s| s.parse()).unwrap_or(/* ... */);
let title = args.get("title").unwrap_or(/* ... */);
self.create(x, y, width, height, title);
}
}
impl CreateWindow {
fn create(&mut self, x: i32, y: i32, w: i32, h: i32, title: String) {
// create window
}
// Allows overloading of functionality, etc.
fn create_centred(&mut self, w: i32, h: i32, title: String) {
// create window centred in the screen
}
}
```
Then to create a window, we can either call the function from within an application:
``` rust
// schemes.get("window") if the window scheme isn't builtin.
schemes.window.create.create(100, 100, 800, 600, "Window");
```
Or opening the URL: `window://create?x=100&y=100&width=800&height=600&title=Window` (I'm not 100% sure how opening/closing/reading/writing with URLs currently works, but hopefully I'm clsoe enough that you understand)
Or a mix of both:
``` rust
let args = Arguments::new();
args.insert("x", "100");
args.insert("y", "100");
args.insert("width", "800");
args.insert("height", "600");
args.insert("title", "Window");
schemes.window.create.call(args);
```
And to get/set the width of the window with the ID `1`, you can do something like:
``` rust
let w = schemes.window.get(1).unwrap().get_width();
schemes.window.get_mut(1).unwrap().set_width(w + 5);
```
Because the windowing system needs to know when a value has been changed, you can't access the value directly. Instead a method needs to be called, which will handle the changes, etc.
And using URLs, just read, increment, and write the value from/to
```
window://1/x
```
More functions could be added to the root window url like `window:/close?id=1` to close windows (although I think this is already handled a different way by closing the window's file descriptor?), `window://query?title=Window_Title` to search for a list of windows with the specific title, etc.
## A few more notes
- `file://path/to/a/file` probably works the same even with this idea.
- `config://hierarchy/of/configs/key` can be read/written from and contains the config value, pretty much the same way that window properties were accessed above.
Obviously the finer details of this are lacking, due to myself only having had a brief look through the codebase, but feel free to comment on why this is/isn't a good idea, if there's something I've missed, or if you've got some ideas for the finer details.

First off, for those who don’t know … pwsh refers to PowerShell Core, the open-source, cross-platform version of PowerShell. I use it as my default shell.
## Description
- When running Ion inside pwsh inside bash, program exit stops the pwsh job in bash.
- When running Ion inside pwsh running directly in a terminal emulator, program exit causes pwsh to crash.
- Exiting Ion from inside pwsh inside pwsh causes both pwsh instances to crash or be suspended respectively.
These things happen regardless of what Ion does, be it displaying help or version, running commands directly, or an interactive session.
This does not happen when running Ion as a direct command (like `pwsh -c ion`), nor when running it from piped input (like `echo ion | pwsh`); only when running it from an interactive session and typing the command directly.
This happens both in gnome-terminal and the Linux console.
Ion is the only program I have ever had this issue with.
Since this is a very niche issue, I’d be willing to look into this myself.

An example syntax could be:

This might as well require the addition of a `return` keyword that is currently missing.

# Proposal for the `ox` package manager (Redox)
This is a proposal for the ox package manager for redox.
## Principles
Ox shall be modular, simple and decentralised. Ox shall both be
capable of compiling from source and installing binaries directly.
Futhermore, Ox shall be secure.
## How Ox works
Ox works over HTTP(S) protocole. Ox is consisting of two types of
data sources:
- Repositories
- Package hosts
### Repositories
In this context, a repository (or repo for short) is a place
storing various information about packages. These includes:
- Where the package can be downloaded (package host)
- What the hashes of the binaries and the source are.
- The hash of the package's public key (which is owned by the
package developer). This ensures that the user will be able
to securely get the latest version without worrying about
the security of the connection/provider.
There is not one central repository. The user adds repositories,
he or she trusts. The repository _X_ (name) from _Y_ (host) can
be found in http(s)://ox.[_Y_]/_X_.oxr.
This is recommended to be over a HTTPS connection, however this
is not required (although a warning is given if not).
This file is of the format:
```
[name of the package]:[version]:[description of the package]:[hash of the binary]:[hash of the source code]:[hash of the developers public key]
[name of the package]:[version]:[description of the package]:[hash of the binary]:[hash of the source code]:[hash of the developers public key]
[name of the package]:[version]:[description of the package]:[hash of the binary]:[hash of the source code]:[hash of the developers public key]
...
```
### Package hosts
The package _X_ of version _V_ from _Y_ can be found in
`http(s)://ox.[*Y*]/[*V*]-[*X*].oxp`. This is a file of the format
```
name=[name]
author=[author]
description=[description]
version=[version]
bin=[path to binary]
source=[path to source]
compile=[path to compile script]
publickey=[public key of the developer]
signature=[digital signature of the files]
files=[files provided in the package]
dependencies=[list of packages this package depends on (includes versions)]
```
The hash of the binary/source is checked, of course (using the
hash from the repositories). So is the signature.
If the version is set to `_` the latest version of the package
is returned. To make sure that this package is safe, the signature
is checked (using the signature in the repository). If no developer
signature is found in the repository a warning is returned.
## Installation
Installation is done via downloading the binary and running it while
tracking the files it creates. These are stored together with the
`files` parameter given by the package host. These are used if the
user wants to uninstall the package.
## The CLI
### `ox get [package]`
Installs `[package]` using the binary. If multiple packages named
[package] are found in the repositories, the user is asked to
choose the package.
### `ox get -c [package]`
Installs [package] from the source.
### `ox remove [package]`
Remove [package] including files that it has created.
### `ox add [repository name and host]`
Add a new repository.
### `ox clean`
Cleans up all orphaned packages.
### `ox update`
Updates the repositories.
### `ox upgrade`
Install all new upgraded packages.
## Unresolved questions, TODOs etc.
Lots of things. For example:
- How will `ox` manage multiple versions of the same package?
- In what language will compile scripts be written?
